Sherman Station

Sherman Station, a symbol of the rich heritage of Nevada, is Elko's "turn of the century" landmark.

In 1875, 600 acres were homesteaded by Valentine and Sophie Walther on Sherman Creek in Huntington Valley. Their first years in the valley were spent calling two covered wagons home. They were homesteading 60 miles south of Elko. A log house was completed so that the couple could raise their family of 12 children (eight girls and four boys). Tragedy struck the family in 1895 as a carriage accident killed Valentine's wife, Sophie.

Years after the death of Sophie and after most of the children were grown and living on their own, Valentine set about building a new, larger two-story log home. After seven years of back-breaking work the new home was completed. It was deemed the largest log home in Nevada. The new home was a central location for a growing communities activities, as the new home became a stage stop, post office and community center. With the establishment of the post office, the ranch became Sherman.

The Sherman buildings reflect Valentine's belief in logs as the perfect building material. His choice of building materials have found to reflect the area's historical significance, the late nineteenth century.

The Sherman Station Project began in August 1995 after Peter and Kathy Scheidmann donated the structures to the Elko Chamber of Commerce. Fund raisers and grant money enabled the relocation and reconstruction of the Sherman Station. By 1997, the Station was moved from its original location south 60 miles to Elko to its present location at 14th and Idaho Street.

In October 1997 a Carlin Conservation Camp crew began putting the Sherman stable back together after disassembling it at the original location.

In November 1999, the Visitors Center and Sherman Station Complex opened to the public.

The main house is now home to the Elko Area Chamber of Commerce and serves as a visitors and information center for Elko.

Nevada's heritage is displayed in five historical ranch buildings that are over a century old. The ranch house, stable, creamery, blacksmith shop and the schoolhouse were carefully moved from their original location to Elko and restored. Guided and self-guided tours are available of the facilities.
